Elaine Coifman has been working in the leather industry for over 25 years. In November, she opened a showroom in Worthington. Located at 571 N. High St., the showroom offers customers the opportunity to see completed bags and small giftable items. In the showroom, customers can also handpick each element of their own custom leather bag.
The first step in building a custom bag is picking the design. There are 14 options, all displayed along a wall to aid in this step of decision making. Totes, messenger bags, and handbags are among the choices. Next, Coifman rolls out several types of leather and wool for customers to select from. Various colors and finishes are available, including red, green, black, and several shades of brown. Once the exterior color is selected, samples of straps are placed on the leather selection. Different colors and widths are available, and Coifman is available to help customers select the option that will look best with their bag.
Coifman offers several pocket types for inside the bag, from large to small, compartmentalized to zipper. The final option is the hardware on the bag. Tacks and buckles are both displayed, and Coifman offers her expert advice on what finish of hardware looks best with the bag you have designed. Coifman takes your selections and spends a couple weeks crafting the bag and contacts you when the item is ready to be picked up.
In addition to the build-your-own bag samples, the showroom also carries smaller giftable items. Koozies, key chains, bracelets, and small bags are a few of the available items. Coifman also has a variety of stamps she can use to brand the leather journals. These smaller items are also available at a host of local places, including Igloo Letter Press, Wholly Craft, Ohio History Center gift shop, Urban Emporium, and State & Third.
The Branch Line Leather Co. showroom has open studio hours on Fridays year-round, and on Saturdays during the Worthington Farmer’s Market. Other days are available by appointment.
