What would Her Majesty say?

What would Her Majesty say? The Queen's handbag designer gives its old classics a VERY modern makeover in a range of psychedelic colours

  • Launer has unveiled a new customisation service on some of its bestsellers
  • Lets shoppers choose from range of vibrant colour combinations and materials
  • Queen is reported to own around 200 Launer bags - all of them plain black
  • The British heritage brand, which was launched in 1941, has a Royal Warrant

Come rain or shine, the Queen is seldom seen without a trusty Launer handbag.

But now the monarch's favourite designer has undergone a modern makeover with some of its bestselling classics available in a range of psychedelic colour combinations for the first time.

The eye-popping hues are available as part of a new online service from the British heritage brand that lets shoppers customise their made-to-order accessories online.

Customers are able to choose from an array colours, finishes and skins, ranging from calf leather to 'exotics' such as lizard, python, ostrich and crocodile.

Royal seal of approval: While the Queen is estimated to own around 200 Launer pieces, they are all cut in an understated black leather or patent (pictured at Ascot in 2014)

The 'state-of-the-art bespoke' service applies to Launer's Judi, Juliet, Viola, Gloria and Traviata models as well as its Eight Credit Card Wallet - all of which are painstakingly handcrafted in England.

With the structured bags costing between £1,200 and £2,100, choosing the lizard skin as an extra add-on from the Customise at Launer service increases the price tag of an old classic by up to £445.

Known for its iconic 'twisted rope' emblem, Launer (launer.com) was established in 1941 and awarded a Royal Warrant after supplying with Queen with leather good since 1968.

A top seller in Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason and a favourite among society ladies, the company recorded a sale increase of over 400 per cent in the past four years on its website.

Chairman Gerald Bodmer is still at the helm of Launer at the age of 85, operating the company with a showroom near to Soho and factory in the Midlands - while coping with demand from Russia, Japan and China.

The monarch was most recently spotted with a Launer bag when she made a surprise appearance at London Fashion Week in February, seated alongside US Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

But don't expect to see Her Majesty stepping out in a neon-hued Launer any time soon; while the Queen is estimated to own around 200 Launer pieces, they are all cut in an understated black leather or patent.
